Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is both endogenously synthesized by the body and consumed with meals. Although cholesterol is generally considered harmful and is notorious for causing vascular disorders, it plays many crucial roles in the body, including the synthesis of vitamin D, estrogen, and testosterone. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as good cholesterol as it is transported from peripheral tissues towards the liver for metabolism. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is known as bad cholesterol as it is transported towards peripheral tissues. LDL can clog arteries, causing atherosclerosis and heart attacks/strokes.

High cholesterol levels are usually symptomless; therefore, cholesterol levels should be monitored using blood tests and home kits. Levels of cholesterol in the blood can be lowered using drugs called statins (atorvastatin, pravastatin, etc.), cholesterol absorption inhibitors, nicotinic acid, fibrates, and combination therapy.
